Cold Soaking Jars allow you to shave weight and save time and energy by going stove-less. Cooking meals on the trail may be a favorite part of the day for some. But for others, it’s a headache that requires a lot of extra gear. Many foods you’d normally rehydrate or cook with boiling water can be prepared just as easily with cold water and a little time – that's cold soaking. All you need is a sealed container to soak food in and 30-60 minutes.
Just add water to your food at least a half hour before you plan to stop for the day or eat your next meal, then keep on hiking. It’ll be ready to eat the moment you set your pack down. No more assembling a stove, waiting for water to boil and food to rehydrate, monitoring fuel levels, or scrubbing burnt pots. If you find these things to be a burden, then break from the routine and leave the stove and pot behind.
Our Cold Soaking Jars are translucent polypropylene that meet FDA standards and are BPA free. You can see what’s in it and how much is left. Straight sides with no lip means food doesn’t get caught and cleanup is a breeze. Unlike Telenti and peanut butter jars, the inner walls and bottom are both smooth so it’s easy to scrape all food out with a spoon (except a tiny bump in the bottom center). The lid is ribbed for good grip while screwing on and off. And an F-217 polyethylene foam liner in the lid seals the jar so it won’t leak in your pack. While you get bonus gelato with a Telenti jar, you won’t get a lid with a seal. Same with a peanut butter jar. And if you want to use our jar for rehydrating a hot meal, go ahead and pour boiling water right in. Telenti and Peanut Butter jars will melt with boiling water.

Just the Basics
Tried a variety of jars, but this one satisfies my needs for cold soaking without sacrificing the clean-up. No threads or divots in the jar to impede cleaning the inside after the meal. The lid seals well too, which oddly wasn't the case with some recommended jars.

Excellent for cold soaking and more
These don't leak (unlike the PB jars I've been using). Plus as described, they are easier to get all the food out of. I bought two sizes for different foods, but the Large is better. I can get a whole meal in it with a risk of overflowing. Funny how much I feel comforted by these containers!

A mininalists dream
I use this for cold soaking foods, cold brewing coffee & tea, shaking protein powder with water (it doesn’t leak) and sometimes just food storage. It works perfectly for all of these and keeps my gear inventory low & light! Hoorah! Life is good.

it does the job
This jar hadn’t leaked even though I use it daily to thoroughly shake my protein powder. It’s better than plastic jars I have been able to find as part of food or merchandise packaging that I’ve seen over a couple of years. Also, it’s hard to buy a jar or two online, especially those described in adequate detail. I think buying from litesmith is one of your more efficient options, even if you might think the world throws enough polypropylene at you that surely such jars might be available for a fraction of the price. Perhaps … if you bought at least ten or a hundred.

If you intend to cold soak, you won't find a better container anywhere than the Litesmith jars. They are light weight, tough, translucent, easy to eat out of and easy to clean!

I purchased the Large Cold-Soaking Jars 20 oz (600 ml). The shipping was super fast, and the jars are an absolute quality product. Perfect flat bottom, large 3 11/16 " opening and clear. New to the world of "Cold-Soaking", I found these jars go best with a product by Humangear called "GoBites Click Spoon." The spoon fits right inside the (600 ml jar), also I purchased an extra jar, just drill some holes in the lid and "Ta-da" you have a cold-soak strainer. Great jars!
The 600 ml size nests perfectly in a 500 ml pot/cup (GSI brand, ~3.7 inch inner diameter), is big enough for re-hydrating my typical meals, and is easy to keep clean. When you're done you can also store a 110 g fuel canister, lighter, etc in the jar and use the lid to hold everything in place without rattling around.

Great Jars
I purchased 3 sizes over the past few months & love them. I use them for cold soaking food. The wide mouth makes it easy to fill, mix & eat from. The jars do not leak & are light weight. Some sizes nest well. Check internal/external dimensions.

Must have gear
These containers are awesome. Even if you don't cold soak, they serve as a perfect, lightweight container for eating meals. Doubles as a 24 ounce water storage container. A good technique is to save weight by putting all your freeze dried in ziplock bags. Use these containers to soften the freeze dried with hot or cold water.

Easy to eat from and to clean
The headline says it all. No groves, no dimples, no ridges, nothing to get in the way of your spoon searching for yummy morsels and nothing to make cleaning harder or nearly impossible. Fits into my Mountain Laurel Designs 520mm Titanium cup and weighs 3 grams less than my other jar. The weight saved isn’t a big deal but the ease and thoroughness of cleaning really is! No Brainer
What’s to even think about? This product is inexpensive, and it works. It seals so there are no leaks. The peanut butter jar might, or might not. Is that a chance you want to take? I ordered on a Saturday, and it went into the mail that day. Great product, and great service. What else can I say?

Better than Talenti Jars
I’ve enjoyed cold soaking in Talenti jars for a few years now. To cut to the chase, the XL jar is a game changer. Just order it. You’ll be glad you did. It gets a great deal of use in the backcountry and around my home.

Not just great for cold soaking. Wonderful for foraging too!
I got these for cold soaking but also for foraging. I do a lot of foraging for plants I can turn into tinctures. These plastic jars are way easier to bring with me than glass jars and I don't have to worry that I'll stab myself and destroy my gear if I slip on a hillside and fall on my pack.

If you want to remove the liner...
Great jar. The straight edge lip is much better to eat out of than my peanut butter jar. 775ml is the right size for hiker hunger on long trails where I'd be fixing something like two ramen packs or a whole Idahoan pack plus some protein. The lid liner is nice to prevent leaks, but I had concerns about keeping it clean long-term as it's glued in to the lid, and liquid will undoubtedly seep underneath. This was easily rectified by pulling up the outer edge of the liner and yanking it free. There were four glue dots on the lid which were easily scraped off. Now the liner can be popped back in where it’s still fully functional and removed easily when washing it to get underneath.

Excellent product
After years of recycling of types of containers I came across and found them to be the best I've used. Straight side walls, easy of clean, and no leaking, what more could you ask for. I like the 16oz size the best as it is the right diameter for my hand.

Skip the Skippy's jar....
... and grab some of these. Much better grade of plastic than the commercial food jars. Due to human error on my part, I ended up with a Medium and an X Large. But in the end I win because the Medium will nest inside the X Large. How cool is that. Highly recommended. Litesmith really did their homework to find these.

Tis but a jar . . . .
Much better shape than a peanut butter jar. The 16 oz size came in at 1.7 oz on my scale. Okey Dokey for your cold soaky. Should be delightful. Next up, the bar only diet, about 12 bars a day, 1.8 oz/210 cal each on average. Six days of food in three medium Loksaks, 8.1 pounds.

Simple and straightforward product. The polypropylene can handle boiling water without melting compared to the plastic in Talenti jars. Really like how easy it is to clean. Arrived very quickly.

Flat sides, good tides
Works great, much easier to clean out than a peanutbutter jar. The one I ordered got destroyed by the postal service and litesmith sent me a new one free of charge immediately no questions asked. A++
