Alpenflow transfers isobutane fuel between canisters. Gather your growing collection of half empty canisters, consolidate them with Alpenflow, then recycle the empties. Top off half empty canisters before a trip so you have peace of mind you won’t run out. To save a few bucks, refill small canisters using a big canister. On trail, borrow fuel from a hiker box or give some fuel to a friend.

Alpenflow is tiny, weighs less than a penny, and it’s simple. Use it at home, take it on your next adventure.

Alpenflow is compatible with isobutane fuel canisters only – MSR, Jetboil, Snow Peak, GSI, Optimus, Primus, plus more.

How to Use

  1. Weigh your half-empty canisters and divide the weight by the original full weight to determine the percentage full.
  2. To allow fuel to transfer you need to create a temperature difference between the two canisters. Warm the giving canister by placing it in the sun or next to your body. Never use an oven or flame.
  3. Cool the receiving canister by placing it in a refrigerator, freezer, ice chest, cold stream, snow, or shady area. Give it 5-10 minutes.
  4. Only use Alpenflow in a well-ventilated area away from open flames. Place the cool receiving canister on a solid, stable surface. Insert Alpenflow in either orientation in the top of the canister, no threading needed. Flip the warm giving canister upside down and insert it on Alpenflow. Make sure the cool receiving canister is on the bottom.
  5. Press down hard for 5-10 seconds. Repeat as necessary, especially if filling a near-empty lower canister. Stop to check the weight of the receiving canister as you go. Be careful not to overfill. Once the warm giving fuel mixes and heats the cool receiving fuel sufficiently, the transfer will slow and eventually stop.

  • To avoid injury and mitigate the risk of liquid butane expanding when the canister is heated, never fill beyond the original fill level (~80%)
  • To avoid injury, never use a flame or oven to heat canisters
  • To avoid injury, never fill canisters with pure propane, and only transfer “winter mix” fuel (70% butane/30% propane) into canisters rated for winter mix fuel
  • Fuel canisters do not meet D.O.T. requirements for commercial transportation after refilling. It’s illegal for businesses to transport refilled canisters.
