Grubcan Wave is a bear-resistant canister to stop bears and other critters from accessing your food and smellables. While it protects your food, it also protects the bear from getting an easy meal which can lead to preferring our food to their natural diet, eventually becoming conditioned to getting food from humans.
Wave holds 4-6 days of food when repackaged. It’s lighter and narrower than most popular bear cans at just 31 oz/1.94 lb (0.88 kg). The round, cylindrical shape with a slippery surface makes it difficult for bears to grip in their mouth or grab with their paws. They’ll play with it, try to crush it, but eventually get bored when unsuccessful at opening the canister. Your food remains safe and the bear goes back to finding food in the wild.
The patented lid has a novel ring combo lock with no numbers to remember, zero struggle to open, and no tools needed. To open rotate the three rings, one at a time, until each indicator lines up with the arrow. Then just lift the lid off, no unscrewing necessary. To lock, replace the lid, lining up the lid arrow to the canister nub and scramble the three rings, one at a time, so the indicators do not line up with the arrow. Each ring indicator should be in a different position from the others.
The canister is made of strong transparent polycarbonate with wave grooves for added strength. It’s easy to find contents of the can from the outside and see your hand reaching in. When looking in the wide opening, light shines through the sidewall so there’s no problem finding what you’re looking for.
The canister can be carried inside your pack or strapped to the top or bottom. A narrower form factor and rounded edges help it slide easily into your smaller pack. In larger, wider packs it may even fit horizontally. Wave-shaped grooves in the sidewall capture straps for securing the canister to the outside of your pack. One downside to the narrower shape and rounded lid – it doesn’t make a great camp chair.
Wave has been tested and approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) and is currently being tested for approval by the Wildlife Management Institute (WMI). It is approved for use in all US National Parks, except Yosemite and SEKI (only due to the approval application process being closed since 2015). Before you backpack in any area, check the bear safety requirements.
