A Water Filter Coupling connects a Sawyer water filter to a water bladder or bottle. It has three main uses:
Backflush and Clean
To backflush and clean your Sawyer Squeeze, Micro Squeeze, or dual-threaded Mini water filter, remove the cap from your filter and screw on the Coupling, then screw the other end of the Coupling to a water bladder or plastic water bottle (28 mm thread) filled with clean, filtered water. Now squeeze the bladder or bottle to force water back through the filter. This will backflush dirt and contaminants out of the filter, keeping a high flow when filtering. Repeat as necessary until the water comes through clear and easy.
Direct Connect
To direct connect the output of your Sawyer Squeeze, Micro Squeeze, or dual-threaded Mini water filter to a water bottle or bladder, remove the cap from your filter and screw on the Coupling, then screw the other end of the Coupling to the receiving water bottle (28 mm thread) or bladder.
Gravity Filter
To build a gravity filter, attach a water filter to a water bladder full of dirty water, remove the cap from your filter and screw on the Coupling, then screw the other end of the Coupling to the clean water bladder or plastic bottle (28 mm thread). Hang the assembly so gravity allows the water to flow through the filter into the clean water bladder or bottle.

I plan to use this instead of the syringe that comes with the filter to backwash my Sawyer water filter on and extended backpacking trip.

Very useful.

Replaces the Syringe and allows the Sawyer to act as a gravity feed unit. Multi-use for virtually no weight. Could be a little longer to accommodate more threads from bottles and the Sawyer unit together but, not enough of an issue to keep me from using it.

That syringe for the Sawyer has always bugged me. So heavy but I didn't dare leave it home. This little gizmo worked just fine to backslash my filter and zapped some weight from my pack.
